Seas and oceans make up 71% of the earth’s surface. Distribution of the seas and oceans according to the hemispheres differs.

The area covered by the seas and oceans in the Southern Hemisphere is greater than in the Northern Hemisphere. That is why the Southern Hemisphere is also called the water hemisphere.

Oceans

There are  5 oceans on our planet. These oceans are also close to the seas. The names of the oceans are as follows; the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, and Arctic Ocean.

Some Facts about the Oceans 

⇒⇒ The oceans are separated from the seas by the size and depth of the area they cover. 

⇒⇒  There are about 250,000 species in the oceans. This number is constantly increasing with new discoveries. So far, only 5% of the oceans have been explored.

⇒⇒ About 20,000 fish species live in the oceans.

⇒⇒ More than half of the oceans are composed of the Pacific Ocean.

⇒⇒ The oceans determine the world’s climate. It regulates air temperature and is responsible for precipitation.
