“TO BE” is the basic verb used to describe objects, and to indicate their properties, places, and positions.

It appears as was/were in the simple past tense.

“was” is used for “I,He, She, It .

“were” is used for “You, We, They”.

The verb ‘to be’ is used as “was not”,  or “were not” in negative sentences. Its short form is “wasn’t” or “weren’t”.

Examples:

  • I was in London last year.
  • They were splendid at the show last night.
