Reported Questions

Reported Questions is a subject that can be examined in two stages. There are different transfers for yes/no question patterns and for question patterns starting with wh-.

• She asked me ‘Do you speak Spanish?’ – She asked me if/ whether I spoke Spanish.

In the example above, a question that can be answered as yes or no was asked, and during the indirect transfer, a connection is made with the ‘if’ or ‘whether’ suffix, and a straight sentence is formed.

• Mom asked me “What did you buy as a birthday gift for your friend?” – Mom asked me what I had bought as a birthday gift for my friend.

In the example above, the interrogative sentence starting with wh- was changed into a straight sentence and reported.
